Remittance cost calculator

The price of an international transfer is not on the fee line — it is inside the exchange rate. Four numbers are enough to find it.

A transfer costs you two things: a fixed fee and a spread. The fee does not move with the amount; the spread scales with it exactly. So the larger the transfer, the more the cost sits in the rate you cannot see rather than the fee you can — which is how a "zero fee" offer becomes the expensive one.

Total cost = amount × (mid-market rate − quoted rate)  +  fixed fee × quoted rate

A worked example first

Assumptions: mid-market rate 1,070 KRW/AUD, fixed fee A$5. These are illustrative figures chosen to show the structure, not a live quote.

Amount sent 0.4% spread1% spread2.5% spread
A$1,000 ₩9,609 0.90% of the amount · 45% of it spread ₩15,997 1.49% of the amount · 67% of it spread ₩31,966 2.99% of the amount · 84% of it spread
A$10,000 ₩48,129 0.45% of the amount · 89% of it spread ₩112,297 1.05% of the amount · 95% of it spread ₩272,716 2.55% of the amount · 98% of it spread
A$50,000 ₩219,329 0.41% of the amount · 98% of it spread ₩540,297 1.01% of the amount · 99% of it spread ₩1,342,716 2.51% of the amount · 100% of it spread

Read the table down a column. In the cheapest cell (A$1,000 at 0.4%) the fixed fee is more than half the cost; by the A$50,000 row it is a rounding error in every column. As the amount grows, the thing worth comparing shifts from the fee to the rate.
