Ahead of the Reserve Bank meeting this Tuesday (3 November), annual inflation to September came in at 4.3 per cent. Our most-read posts last week were about Western Sydney International (WSI) airport and retirement income, so this issue picks six stories: what it really costs to get to the new airport, how much working parents can earn before their pension drops, the retirement gap for renters, savings bonus rates that fall to 0.10 per cent, the new Bankstown metro, and hotel phishing emails that quote your real booking number. Every story comes with numbers you can check yourself. FX rates and the WBAU transfer-size breakdown are shown separately below. A one-line reply to any closing question helps us shape the next issue.
WSI shuttle at $25 or airport parking: which suits you?
You may be booking a December trip to Korea or a summer holiday and noticing that flights out of Western Sydney (WSI) look cheaper.
Guardian Australia reports that WSI, which opened on 25 October, runs 24 hours a day. But the airport metro line will not open until at least December next year because of a construction dispute. Until then, the main public transport options are a free shuttle from St Marys station every 30 minutes and a $25 shuttle from Parramatta and Central stations. When Guardian Australia priced a 1 to 12 December return trip from four parts of Sydney, Kingsford Smith was generally cheaper once the cost of getting to the airport was included. Parking at WSI, however, was significantly cheaper, at least during an introductory discount. The ABC also reported travellers on opening weekend who landed at WSI by mistake while their car was parked at the other airport.
What to check: whether your ticket says SYD or WSI, and the total trip cost, meaning the fare plus your shuttle, rideshare or tolls, plus parking.
In my view, until the metro opens, WSI is not yet a real option for anyone living near the city. Which applies to your household: the $25 shuttle or airport parking?
Pensioner parents: earn over $526 a fortnight and it drops
If your parents receive the age pension and still work part-time at a supermarket or restaurant, you may have wondered how much extra hours cost them in lost pension.
According to the Department of Social Services, as reported by the ABC, the work bonus disregards the first $300 of work income each fortnight. That means a single pensioner with no other income can earn up to $526 a fortnight before the pension starts to reduce. A couple who are both eligible can earn a combined $996. Above those levels, the pension reduces as income rises. About 15 per cent of Australians over 67 now work, up from 11 per cent in 2021. The business group ACCI wants the work bonus doubled to $600 a fortnight, but that is only a proposal.
What to check: whether your parents’ fortnightly work income goes above $526 ($996 combined for a couple), and whether the income reported to Centrelink matches their actual pay.
In my view, with more people retiring with a mortgage, the rules that penalise working pensioners need fixing first. Have your parents ever cut their hours to protect their pension?

Single renters in retirement fall $13,404 a year short
If you migrated later in life, have had fewer years to build super and still rent, you may already be worried about money in retirement.
ASFA figures for the June quarter 2026 (ages 65 to 84), reported by the ABC, show the single age pension is $32,180 a year, or $38,014 with rent assistance. A modest lifestyle for a single renter costs $51,418. Even a single home owner needs $36,548 for a modest lifestyle, which is more than the pension alone. For couples, the pension with rent assistance is $54,017, while a modest lifestyle for renters costs $69,376. The government says the full single pension has risen by more than $6,500 a year since it took office.
What to check: how much your current super could add each year in retirement, and whether you expect to own your home or still be renting. Find your row in those figures first.
In my view, rather than waiting for a pension increase, it is better to work out how much of this gap your own super will cover. Do you expect to own your home when you retire, or to be renting?

Miss one savings condition and interest falls to 0.10%
Between rent and everyday bills, it is easy to miss the monthly deposit your savings account requires.
The ABC, using Canstar data, reports that after the last rate rise the big four banks lifted their maximum savings rates by 0.20 or 0.25 percentage points. Those rates only apply when you meet conditions such as a minimum monthly deposit or no withdrawals. Miss one and you get the base rate of 0.10 per cent for that month. A 2023 ACCC inquiry found more than 70 per cent of customers never met the monthly conditions. As of June, Commonwealth Bank alone held nearly $122 billion of customer money in accounts earning no interest, and only 16 per cent of consumers had switched savings accounts in the past three years.
What to check: whether last month’s statement shows the bonus rate, and exactly what your account’s conditions are.
In my view, meeting your current account’s conditions every month comes before shopping around for a higher rate. Did your savings account earn its bonus rate last month?

Lakemba to Victoria Cross now 37 minutes, 24 minutes faster
If you live around Campsie, Belmore or Lakemba and have spent two years on pink replacement buses, your commute has just changed.
Guardian Australia reports the Sydenham to Bankstown metro extension opened on 30 October. Bankstown to Central now takes 28 minutes, six minutes faster than the old train, and Lakemba to Victoria Cross takes 37 minutes, a 24-minute saving. Services run every four minutes in peak hours and every 10 minutes off-peak and on weekends. Replacement buses also ran over the opening weekend while people adjusted.
What to check: whether your trip goes through the city and beyond, since the time saved grows on longer trips. If you ruled out suburbs on this line because of transport, they may be worth another look.
In my view, this opening gives renters and buyers a real reason to put these suburbs back on the list. Has the new line cut more than 10 minutes from your commute?
A ‘card blocked’ email with your real booking? Don’t click
If you have booked a hotel or a holiday park such as BIG4 for summer, you may get a ‘card verification’ email that quotes your real booking number and dates.
The ABC reports that booking provider RMS was hacked and guest names, contact details and booking information are being used in phishing scams. The emails show a real reservation number, room type and check-in and check-out dates, then claim your card was blocked and ask you to click a button to re-enter your details. The messages are also arriving by text and WhatsApp. RMS says credit card and payment details were not accessed, so the scammers want you to type your card number in yourself. More than 6,000 properties worldwide use the system, and BIG4, Reflections and Discovery Parks are among those reported to be affected.
What to check: confirm any booking issue by calling the property’s official number, not through a link. If you have already entered card details, contact your bank straight away.
In my view, if a property raises a payment problem and leads with a link, treat it as fake. Have you received one of these ‘card check’ messages recently?
One insight from WBAU transfer data
How Korea-bound business transfers differed by amount
Transfers are grouped into three AUD amount bands by transaction count, including repeat transfers by the same customer.
- Under A$5,000: 39.6% (806 transfers)
- A$5,000 to under A$20,000: 26.6% (541 transfers)
- A$20,000 or more: 33.9% (690 transfers)
Fees can represent different shares of total costs at different transfer amounts. Compare rates, fees and recipient amounts for your own payment; these bands are not recommended transfer sizes.
Basis: 2025-09-01~2026-08-31 · Internal WBAU AU→KR B2B transfers sent in AUD, with paid/approved status, deduplicated by transfer number. Not representative of all Korean businesses in Australia; customer nationality is not classified. No customer identities or individual transactions are disclosed.
